ABOUT BESSIE’S

Where it all started…
I grew up in the beautiful town of Pateley Bridge, in the heart of Nidderdale, inspired by my Nan, “Bessie,” and our life on the family farm. She always involved me and my sisters in whatever she was making — pies, preserves, bread, or jam — using seasonal fruit and vegetables from the garden and turning them into something truly yummy. Naming my business Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves just felt right. 

From my early days in the catering industry — working at some of Yorkshire’s finest hotels, including Rudding Park, Swinton Castle, and Weetwood Hall — I’ve always had a passion for great food and exceptional customer service. That passion became the foundation of Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves. I love getting to know my customers and hearing their stories.

What began as a hobby making preserves for family and friends, encouraged by my biggest supporters, has grown into a business I’m proud to call my own. My children, Grace and Henry, are part of the journey — Grace helps with labelling, and Henry takes his role as chief taster very seriously. It’s wonderful to see their interest and to pass on my love of ingredients, flavour, and the joy of making something special from scratch.

Bessie has given her name not only to my preserves business, but also to a footpath in her hometown. Bessie’s Way, in Pateley Bridge near the family farm, was dedicated to my Nan in honour of her love for walking the local hills and her presence in the community. Even now, when I return to visit family, it’s heartwarming to see this lasting tribute to her.

Honouring her legacy through Bessie’s Yorkshire Preserves is a joy, and every jar we make carries a little of her warmth, tradition, and love of good food.
